trying to lift the siepirits of those left with nothing. plus this. good morning to you. happy thanksgiving. i'm carol costello. thank you so much for spending at least part of your holiday with us. for the first time in more than a week, it has been a relatively quiet day across israel and fwa gaza. the cease fire is holding. at the border, israeli troops are packing up after spending one final night there. israeli forces says when the cease fire started, three rockets were fired into israel. two hit open areas and the third was intercepted by the iron dome missile defense system. if everything remains this relatively quiet until 2:00 eastern this afternoon, the gaza border crossings will open. rallies opened in the streets as

they celebrated what they call a victory over israel. the prime minister says he's dedicated the victory to that man, ahmed al ja'abari, killed in that air strike. as you know, that air strike inciting the fighting. hopeful that the cease fire will hold? >> reporter: the longer it does hold, as each hour goes by, people do grow more hopeful it will, in fact, be sustained. people are very aware that at this point in time it is still a very short-term solution as the looming issue of a long-lasting peace deal does still remain elusive. for the first time since this all began last wednesday, we are not seeing deserted streets in gaza. we're not hearing air strikes, various artillery rockets being fired in the distance, not hearing the wail of sirens. quite the contrary. people were in the streets since

the cease fire was first announced last night. earlier, after midday prayers, chanting for their victory, this very much being perceived as a victory here, the fact that people of gaza were able to stand up in the face of israeli aggression. that being said, people are also out simply because they could be. for the last eight days they have been living in sheer terror, entirely unsure when and where an israeli air strike would be hitting. here they do not have air raid sirens to warn them. finally for the first time last night they were able to sleep without fear of being targeted and this morning throughout the day as well, we've been hearing what would sound like the normal so sounds of life in gaza. horns honking and people out and about. carol? >> we'll keep our fingers crossed. some are giving up their traditional thanksgiving holiday to help others in new york and new jersey. places hit hard by superstorm sandy last month. so many homes destroyed,

including on staten island. deb feyerick joins us now from new york. dozens and dozens of volunteers are helping out this holiday. it's a beautiful thing. >> reporter: you know, it really is. a lot of people got up very, very early, crack of dawn in order to go into staten island, in various neighborhoods in order to bring turkey burgers, set-up grills, give them food so they can give them solace at this point in time. a number of volunteers have come out today. they're getting their marching orders, their instructions. one thing they were just told, that is that they've got to be sensitive. they are going into communities where so many people were affected and they're still traumatized by the effects of sandy. i want to talk to one of the volunteers here. eric bagley. you gave up your thanksgiving morning in order to do this. what kind of impact do you want to have on the people out on staten island? >> well, i think we just want everybody on staten island to he know that they are loved by a

god who is going to see them through this. and that we just want to be here for them and, you know, provide a good day for them in spite of all that they've been through. >> reporter: do you think by bringing your energy into the community, you're also bringing grills, clean-up tools. this isn't just about let's have a grilling experience but it's also about what kind of help you can bring to these individuals. what do you expect? >> i expect that we're just going to come in with a lot of energy, but be very sensitive to the people here. and people are just going to go all day long and be the hands and feet of god. >> erin bagley, thank you very much. we had a look at some of these trucks filled with wheelbarrows, shovels and hammers. they are going to go into homes and actually rip out some of the drywall, insulation that was ruined in the flood. they're going to set up these grills whens they all done and

from congress. jackson says he needs to spend time, quote, restoring my health. jackson mysteriously disappeared from capitol hill in may and his office later revealed he was dealing with depression and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. health concerns aren't the only thing jackson is facing, though. ted rowlands is in chicago. good morning, ted. >> reporter: good morning, carol. yeah. well, the health concerns are significant. he had two stints at the mayo clinic. talking to family members, that was the main reason why he just couldn't move forward. and he gave his letter of resignation to john boehner yesterday. in that letter, though, for the first time -- this is what you were alluding to, carol, he did acknowledge he knows he is the subject of a federal investigation for possible misuse of campaign funds. and in that letter at one point he said talking about that, i'm doing my best to address the situation responsibly, cooperate with the investigators and

accept responsiblity for my mistakes because they are my mistakes and mine alone. that last part is significant, because his wife, sandy jackson, here in the city of chicago, according to "the wall street journal," is also part of this federal investigation. so, very interesting that jesse jackson jr. in his resignation letter to john boehner mentioned that these problems are mine and mine alone. people in chicago are watching very closely, will sandy jackson, his wife, try to get his seat that is now, of course, open? we've not heard from jesse jackson jr. or jesse jackson sr. we have heard, though, from bobby rush, u.s. representative also here in chicago and very close friend of the jacksons. take a listen to a little bit of what he had to say yesterday. >> i just find -- at this point for me not only to know that he he won't be in the congress, but

daggett -- >> i've been standing in line 36 hours. >> reporter: love it is. this father of an 18-month-old has been camping out for years. one year he snapped photos as this crowd fought over $5 headphones. >> shoppers just went berzerk. people start lunging and grabbing and you just see the arms all just go at once, just you know, forward, like a team of superheroes. >> what is relatively new is shoppers turning on other shoppers. >> reporter: a consumer psychologist, she says competitive shopping has gotten worse. so accept it on black friday that it's here to stay. >> this piling on stores being desperate for consumers to come and shop so they're going to be offering a lot of deals and making the promotional environment something that predisposes people to not behave. >> reporter: bad behavior has led to serious injuries and even death, to shootings in stores. best buy has been running drills

consumer consumers plan to spend even more this holiday season. renee marsh is in washington with tips to keep your holiday spending under control. good morning. >> good morning, carol. this new survey really suggests that this shopping season will be a good one for retailers. this survey comes from the consumer federation of america as well as the credit union national association. so they spoke with more than 1,000 people over the phone. and the survey is suggesting that we will see holiday spending increase anywhere between 3.5 to 4% from last year. keep in mind that's despite those doom and gloom reports about the fiscal cliff, potential tax hikes on everyone, if congress does not act. of the people who were surveyed between november 9th and 13th, many of them said they do plan on spending more this year compared to last year. i have some interesting breakouts for you here, carol. more men said that they will spend more this year compared to last year than women.

as far as age goes, the generation wires 18 through 24, they say that they, too, plan on spending more. remember, that group of people have had a tough time breaking into the workforce. still, though, they said they planned on spending more as well as latinos and blacks. they, too, say they plan on spending more. so why? that's the big question. why do some people say they plan on spending more this holiday season, simply because as far as the people in this survey, they felt as if their financial situation this year is better than it was last year. carol? >> that's simple. so where are people spending the most money? >> they break it down regionally. and it appears that of the people surveyed in this particular survey here in the south is where we saw that people said they plan on spending more this year compared to last year. i have a number for you. 15% of the people surveyed said they plan on spending more in the south.

the least amount of people who said they plan on spending more, that happened in the west. only 7%. and the northeast and the midwest, they were tied at 12%. so we expect to see more money -- people opening up those wallets more so in the south. carol? >> rene marsh, reporting live from washington. ambassador susan rice is defending herself after coming under fire for her comments on benghazi. she says the attacks by h s by critics are unfounded. usiness credit card! pizza!!!!! slated for demolition by the end of the year following that explosion there earlier this month according to "the indianapolis star." two people died in the blast. the explosion leveled several homes and damaged several others. homes will be torn down over the next two weeks in fear that they could collapse. president obama talks about the blessings we share as americans. >> thanksgiving is a chance to put it all in perspective. to remember that despite our differences we are, and always will be, americans first and foremost. today we give thanks for blessings that are all too rare in this world, the ability to spend time with the ones we love, to say what we want, to worship as we please, to know that there are brave men and women defending our freedom around the globe, to look our children in the eye and tell them that here in america no dream is too big if they're willing to work for it. >> the president also expressed gratitude to fema, first

responders and volunteers who aided victims of superstorm sandy. u.s. ambassador to the united nations susan rice is talking about those talking points she delivered on benghazi. she came under fire for telling americans that the consulate uproizing was a result of an anti-islam video and not an act of terrorism. rice also said that all the facts were not in and the investigation was ongoing, but republicans accused rice and the white house of a cover-up weeks before the election. this week it was revealed those talking points were actually edited by the intelligence community. >> as a senior u.s. diplomat, i agreed to a white house request to appear on the sunday shows to talk about the full range of national security issues of the day, which at that time were primarily and particularly the protests that were enveloping and threatening many diplomatic facilities, american diplomatic

facilities around the world and iran's nuclear program. the attack on benghazi, or on our facilities in benghazi was obviously a significant piece of this. when discussing the attacks against our facilities in benghazi, i relied solely and squarely on the information provided to me by the intelligence community. i made clear that the information was preliminary and that our investigations would give us the definitive answers. i have great respect for senator mccain and his service to our country. i always have and i always will. i do think that some of the statements he made about me have been unfounded. but i look forward to having the opportunity at the appropriate time to discuss all of this with him. >> as you well know, senator mccain has led the charge against rice. she may get the chance to talk to him face to face if president obama does, indeed, nominate her to replace hillary clinton as secretary of state. she'll see mccain at her senate confirmation hearings.

>> we must put our football talk aside for just a moment and talk about this benghazi situation. the director of the national intelligence agency says the intelligence community changed the talking points, not the white house. ambassador susan rice says the same. yet senator john mccain remains suspicious. he released a statement. part of it says this. mccain says this latest episode is another reason why many of us are so frustrated with and suspicious of the actions of this administration when it comes to the benghazi attack. so, roland, is there more there there? >> senator john mccain for anything, he he wants to complain about everything and anything. he has been attacking ambassador rice. it has been shameful. it has been ridiculous. but it's amazing how he never wanted tocy a word about general petraeus when he was running the cia and his involvement with it. it's ridiculous. ambassador rice made it clear in terms of where she got the talking points from. the republicans in the senate want to attack the white house,

want to attack rice. they don't want her to be secretary of state. they don't want to say a word about the intelligence community. i say rice was right to fire back. they should push back. it should be just as aggressive in terms of laying out this is where we got the information from. and even condoleezza rice on fox news said, look, in this kind of situation, you get tons of information and it is always evolving and changing. >> so, caden, is roland right or is senator mccain right? is there more there there? >> i think roland is wrong. let's look at senator graham from south carolina also. if you know his history and senator graham's history, once they dig in, they're not going to quit. what they're looking for is the truth. they've asked for a special prosecutor. eric holder and his own appointees look at this. we have a history here. look. go back to scooter libby and president bush. certainly there was a special prosecutor there.

they uncovered evidence. what they're trying to get down to is who knew what, when and where and what caused the demise of these four great americans when they were begging for help the entire time to an administration with a deaf ear. they will responsibly continue to ask for the complete investigation to get down to the bottom of this. roland is right -- >> you don't need a special -- >> senator graham and senator mccain dig in here, they want to know what's all there. it doesn't look right to the american public, roland t just doesn't. >> let me ask you both -- >> you don't need a -- >> we're going on and on about susan rice and who wrote the talking points and who edited the talking points but how is this helping us find out what went so terribly wrong in ben gau ghazi? how is it doing that? >> first of all, you have multiple committees in the house and the senate. you have homeland security.

have you intelligence. you have defense. you have the bodies already there who have staffs. and this is what they do. you don't need a special committee as senator john mccain is calling for. that makes no sense at all. thankfully, he is now showing up at these hearings. remember, the first one he chose to skip to have a news conference and said later it was a scheduling error. republicans are trying to find the first opportunity to hit this president after he won the election. they want the scuttle of ambassador rice to be secretary of state. i say to the president, you appoint her and say you guys want to fight? bring it. they should go on the offensive. he has a right to appoint anybody he he wants to. >> now see -- >> they want the first person to go after. >> i so disagree with you, roland. voters want peace. they don't want partisan bickering. >> no, no. the president has a right --

good morning. happy thanksgiving. thanks for spending part after your holiday with us. the cease-fire for now is holding. at the border israeli troops is packing up after spending one night there. since the cease-fire began three rockets were fired into israel. two hit open areas and a third was intercepted by israel's iron dome missile defense system. one soldier died after being wounded in one of those rocket attacks. in that area of the world that's considered relatively calm. if everything remains this way until 2:00 eastern gaza border crossings will open. today ral lis popped up in the streets as hamas supporters celebrated what they are causing

a victory. as you know that attack ignited the fighting. the united states and egypt have brokered the cease-fire. nobody surprised by the u.s.'s role but egypt's role surprised many because morsi hails from the brotherhood, a political cousin to hamas. we are joined from cairo. how are egyptians feeling about this cease-fire this morning? >> reporter: well, if you're the leadership of the muslim brotherhood in cairo you're patting yourself on the back today because they really came out looking very favorably in the international community throughout this process. this is a big test for egypt's government led now but the muslim brotherhood.

a talk show host had a lot of concern. would this be a movement that would take up arms? would this be a movement that would give material support for hamas. it turns out that those fears, the way things stand right now turned out to be groundless. it looks like this is a government that's approached this very even handedly to keep their peace treaty and their economic alliances with washington and western capitals. in the end it doesn't look like this is a government that wanted to be seen as radical in the community. back at home u.s. ambassador susan rice is speaking out about those talking points that she

delivered on the attacks in bengha benghazi. she said it appeared the uprising in benghazi sprang up spontaneously because of that anti-islam video. she also said the facts weren't in and the investigation was ongoing. rice was slammed for those comments but information released this week revealed she was speaking from talking points given to her by the director of national intelligence. >> i relied solely on the information provided by the information. worked in good faith to provide the best assessment based on the information available. >> republicans have accused rice and the white house before the

election. jill, this is the first time we're hearing from ambassador rice about this. >> reporter: it is. it was very carefully scripted. there's still three investigations ongoing. there's the fbi investigation. there's the state department investigation and then congress also has been looking into it. those investigations aren't over yet. what senator mccain and other republicans are accusing her of is lying. they are saying she gave information that was incorrect and that she should do a public mea culpa and admit she did that. she is saying she was toefld what to say. she was reading the points made by intelligence. when it came to senator mccain

she was quite diplomatic. >> i was great respect for senator mccain and his service to our country. i always have and i always will. i do think some of the statements he made about me have been unfounded but i look forward to having the opportunity at the appropriate time to discuss all of this with him. >> just one reminder of state of play on this investigation and information. we now understand that the cia drafted those talking points. the dni, director of national intelligence removed the word al qaeda. they said it came from classic information. it's a tightly and it might influence the investigations. >> republicans will probably not be satisfied by rice's

explanations. >> reporter: i would think not at this point because i don't think she really moves the ball from what we understood and that is what the administration has been saying. she was given this information by the intelligence community and that she repeated it and that there was no intention to mislead. it hasn't been accepted by the republicans yet and we'll just have to see where they go. one of the most interesting ones will be the stay department investigation perhaps in december and will really wrap things up. >> all right. after stuffing yourself with turkey today maybe you'll work it off by getting caught up in the black friday shopping frenzy which starts early this year. employees at stores like target want their holiday.

illinois will have to hold a special election following jesse jackson jr.'s resignation in congress jackson disappeared

last may. his office revealed he was dealing with bipolar disorder. he's also accused of possible ethics violations. >> reporter: yeah and he's the subject of federal investigation into the possibility of misusing campaign funds carol. there's a lot going on in the congressman's life. it was really no surprise for folks here in chicago that he did tender his resignation. in the letter he talked about his health issues and admitted that he spoke publicly about this ongoing investigation saying i'm doing my best to address the situation responsibly. his wife sandy jackson is possibly under the same

investigation. that's what the wall street journal is reporting. she's also been floated as a possible replacement for her husband in the house seat that is now vacant. we have not talked to jesse jackson jr. a family member said he would hold a press conference but was fearful he wouldn't make it through it. the only person that's opinion out there is bobby rush who is the representative in the first district. here is a little bit about what he said yesterday at a news conference. >> i just find it's so painful at this point for me not only to know that he wouldn't be in the congress but to know that he's still struggling with a serious, very serious mental health issue. >> reporter: folks in illinois here, his district really loves

him. he didn't campaign at all. everybody knew he was sick and under investigation. he won re-election two weeks ago by an overwhelming margin. there are people in the state of illinois that is upset because it's going to cost taxpayers millions of dollars to put up these special elections. people are thinking why didn't you quit earlier. thanksgiving will not be the same for many along the east coast. superstorm sandy destroyed their homes. a large group of volunteers with big hearts are turning out to lend a helping hand. >> i'm sergeant joaleen taylor here in afghanistan. i'm like to say happy thanksgiving to my family. of our world challenge with the cadillac ats. this is actually starting to feel real now. so many homes destroyed including on staten island. this warms my heart. >> reporter: it really does. a lot of people, several hundred voluntee volunteers and not just here, reaching out to make this thanksgiving a little better and brighter. when you're trying to piece together your life thanksgiving is not the first thing on your mind. this is the liquid church here. they say that because they want to turn compassion into action. what they're doing is setting up these tables in order to prepare a movable thanksgiving feast. they have turkey burgers. they have pie, balloons just to make things a little more festive. jackie will fill us in on things that are going on here. what is the goal? what do you hope to reach in this community? >> we want to give them a little hope back and let them know

we're here to support them in any way and raise spirits in any way and let them know we love them. we're going to have some crafts here for kids. we're going to serve burgers and fries. we have pies. we is have all different stuff and just to be that little glimmer of hope in a tough time. >> when the church came together and said what can we do and this is what you came up with and you have 20 of these movable feasts, did everybody say this is a great idea? >> yeah. amazingly enough we had like two weeks in preparation and we've had over a thousand volunteers coming. the people wanted to come here. they want to love on people. we have a spirit to give back. it's been quite amazing to get this all done if two weeks. >> thank you so much. you can see some of the work being done. this is part of what they're doing.

they got here a little earlier. you can see some of the garbage is bagged up. just raking yard and getting debris out. this part looks clean and bright and shiny but there am debris, this fine sand that's every everything. people are still out in force. these folks here are just sending the message they are behind the people of staen island. >> they're not only making turkey burgers and pies, although i'm sure they are much appreciated. they are also giving other things as well that people really need. >> reporter: they are. what's amazing is first they're going to bring a grill here. after they make this feast, they're going to leave the grill. that's going to be the block grill so people can come out. this whole area, most of the homes here still don't have electricity. this home on the corner here where you see these two volunteers coming in someone from fema is assessing this
